First day at the University

Yesterday we had an orientation day at the University. First we went through all the practical matters and got a guided tour around the main building. The campus is really small (there's only two buildings), but cosy. When we headed to the "computer" rooms I had really hard time not laughing. It's was like going back in time for 10 years. The computers were slow and the screens were the same which we had at vocational school in 2001.

I also got to see my schedule for the semester. At the moment I only have 15 hours of lectures per week. The best part is that my fridays are free so I can easily do long weekend trips if I want to.

My courses are:
  • Data mining
  • Algorithms and data structures
  • Icelandic as a foreign language
  • Icelandic nature (not verified)
  • Writing and critical thinking (not verified)

At the evening the student union arranged a small welcome party for all new students. First we were at the school eating hot dogs and coke (yeah, very icelandic ;) and afterparty was at Cafe Amour. Tap beers cost only 500–800 ISK (about 2,7–4,3 €). I drank Tuborg a lot :) While getting drunk I got acquainted with a local fisherman Hemmi. He had just came back from a 31-day trip in the seas.

I was thinking about going to a whale watching safari this weekend. They are arranged only during summer time (before September) so this might be my only chance to see those giant mofos.
